Bush Violates Human RIghts

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are demanding that former President George W. Bush be arrested for crimes he committed during his presidency. He is accused of allowing the torture and “ill-treatment” of prisoners in the custody of the United States. Bush will be attending the economic summit In Canada on October 20th and these human rights organizations want the Canadian authorities to arrest Bush. However, the Canadian government does not desire to arrest Bush saying they will not be “engaging in cheap stunts.”




These accusations against George W. Bush imply that he has broken the right of protection against torture and cruel and inhuman punishment and humane treatment when detained or imprisoned. The use of tactics such as, water boarding should not be used against prisoners in any country. This type of torture infringes on human rights and breaks international law. This is a difficult situation because if Bush was arrested what would that mean for other heads of state that have committed similar crimes? Should these heads of state be held at a higher standard than normal citizens?

Even though Canada refused to arrest Bush, what would be the implications if they agreed?

    I find human rights organizations that are attempting to persecute individuals for a crime that every single government commits is a bit ridiculous. It is like they have such a hard time finding hard evidence against governments that they turn to any individual they can. If Bush was persecuted then every single president currently would also need to go through extensive investigation for the same thing. Every government uses torture as a way to extract information. That is how many governments get information that will lead to the protection of their citizens. In addition Heads of state do not control the secret institutions that carry out these violations, they have already been developed for years. There are already specific people that are in control, it is not the presidents calling the shots. If Canada arrested Bush it would be a bad move for foreign relations between the two countries.

    The problem is that as the leading Western country we are an example to all those below us. The truth is that if we are going to expect so many other less developed countries to follow our many mandates against torture then we should as well. We cannot assume the role we have a super power without extra responsibilities being laid upon us. This was in the end our decision to be the "best" country there is.
